Our Materials

Every component we use, from the moulding to the backing board, is chosen deliberately, for what it does for the piece inside the frame. We've been doing this since 1994, and we've seen what happens when the wrong materials are used. Faded photos, yellowed mats, artwork damaged by the very thing supposed to protect it.

And for something truly special,  check out our Italian Bellini range.

Mat Boards

The border between your artwork and the frame, more important than most people realise.

A well-chosen mat elevates the entire piece. It creates visual breathing room, separates the artwork from the glass, and when chosen well, makes the finished result feel considered and intentional. We stock a full range of:

  • Acid-free mat boards:

    • Our standard across all jobs. Prevents the yellowing and deterioration that cheaper acidic mats cause over time

  • Archival/conservation mat boards:

    • Museum-grade, lignin-free boards for valuable artworks, original pieces and anything irreplaceable

  • Available in hundreds of colours:

    • From classic whites and off-whites to bold accent colours

Not sure which mat colour suits your piece? That's exactly what our in-store team is here for.

  • Nucore backing board:

    • An economical, acid free, and ultra-stable backing option for works requiring the highest level of support and longevity.

Glass

Protection you can see through, and some you can barely see at all.

The glass in your frame isn't just there to keep the dust off. It's one of the most important protective decisions you'll make.
We stock every level:

  • Standard Clear Glass:

    • Our most economical. A classic choice for general use, with a slight reflective finish.

  • AR70 Glass:

    • Our most popular choice. Reduces reflection and blocks up to 70% of harmful UV rays to help protect your artwork from fading.

  • UV99 Conservation Glass:

    • Offers 99% UV protection, ideal for preserving valuable or sentimental pieces.

  • Museum Glass®:

    • Our premium option. 99% UV protection and virtually invisible clarity with anti-reflective coating. It’s the gold standard for showcasing fine art and taonga.

Conservation Techniques

How we protect what's inside.

Conservation framing is about more than just the materials, it's about how they're used. Every conservation job at AMFM follows the same principles Dixie brought back from London in the 1980s:

  • Reversibility:

    • All work can be undone without damaging the artwork. No permanent adhesives, ever.

  • No contact with glass:

    • Artwork is always spaced away from the glass surface to prevent condensation damage.

  • Acid-free throughout:

    • Mats, backing, tapes and mounting materials are all pH-neutral or alkaline-buffered.

  • Archival mounting:

    • Japanese tissue hinges, conservation corners and museum-standard methods used as appropriate for the piece.

  • Sealed frame backs:

    • The back of the frame is professionally taped to help keep out dust, moisture and insects, creating a cleaner, more stable environment for long-term preservation.
